A silent puppy protest

This weekend Gordy and I decided to check out the weekly non-protest protest that happens at Its Beach every Saturday.  This weekly event is put on by the Friends of Lighthouse Field (FOLF) Organization, with FOLF volunteers bringing tasty donuts and coffee, and contributing bags to help do some extra cleaning of the beach.

An extremely brief history of FOLF:

In 2007, after Lighthouse Field and Its Beach left city control and fell under the jurisdiction of the California State Parks, the leash regulations also changed.  Before this time, dog owners could have their dogs off leash in both the field and beach before 10am and after 4pm.

After the State took control, these leash laws were changed, and now dog owners must keep their dogs on leash at all times.  FOLF formed in order to try to change these laws.  For more information, check out their website.  For more current information about this issue, you can also check out this article in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

And now, back to our story…

We got to Its Beach around 8:45 am, arriving even before the donuts.  Gordy immediately joined in the protest with enthusiasm, making friends instantly with seven-month-old Uno.  The two dogs had a great time sprinting down to the water and back and wrestling together before deciding it would be good to see other dogs as well.

Donut?

Despite the chilly weather, there was a pretty good turnout, and Gordy enjoyed meeting all kinds of dogs.  All the people looked happy as well, munching on their donuts, clutching their warm coffees, and watching the boogie boarders out in the ocean.

On our way out of the beach, Gordy stopped to try and beg a donut from a volunteer.  When that didn’t work he snuck close to the edge of the table, glancing up hopefully at the box.  “Read the sign, Gordy,” I told him, pointing to the words clearly written on the back of the box: “GOOD DOGS DON”T STEAL DONUTS.”  Knowing he had no chance, he darted off for one last sprint around the beach with his best buddy, Uno, before following me up the stairs.

Read the sign, pups!

Gordy can be hard to tire out.  He used to run long distances while training with Sean, and can play frisbee and catch with the best of them, but after this trip he was one pooped puppy, so we got to enjoy a quiet afternoon.  All in all a great way to spend a Saturday morning!

One happy beach dog!
