Turtle’s GoDogz Adventures

We are sorry to say goodbye to another wonderful GoDog.

We first met Turtle almost a year ago when we started walking him and his pals, Wallace and Wednesday. Each of them had such distinctive personalities, but Turtle was often the driving force in those walks. He’d walk with a strut, confident with his pack and ready to face off if he felt there were other dogs that needed to be warned off. Everything he did, he did as large as possible, making up for his small size with extra character.

In order to work with him on relaxing around other dogs, we started taking him on solo adventures without his pack. Usually Gordy would tag along on those – Turtle might be uncomfortable around dogs he doesn’t know, but generally he was a social pup, preferring to spend time with other canines as long as they were Turtle-approved. After their initial meeting, Turtle decided Gordy made the cut and the two became good friends.

On Turtle’s solo adventures, we took him to different locations to see how he’d react. Sometimes he’d be a little nervous at the start. The first time we went to the Seymour Center he froze for a minute, just staring around him. After a bit of encouragement, though, he got back into his normal character, his tongue lolling down the side of his mouth as he strutted down the path, enjoying the different scents.

We also explored Antonelli Pond, Lighthouse Field, and the Meder street path, as well as many walks along Westcliff. In fact, on one of these Westcliff walks Turtle became famous for braving a ferocious storm with Sean and Gordy – this picture made the cover of the Santa Cruz Sentinel!

Turtle wasn’t really an endurance dog, but like any true GoDog he did love his walks, and on colder days he enjoyed doing short jogs with Sean and Gordy. His favorite thing to do, though, was roll around on his back in the grass. Watching him do this, I always thought his name was super appropriate.

Turtle passed away last week. He left us all much sooner than we would have liked, but I can say with certainty that he filled every moment he had with enthusiasm and energy. Over-the-top in attitude and character, Turtle clearly enjoyed his pack and his walks and his people with all his heart. Sean, Gordy, and I will miss our GoDogz adventures with him, and we’re very sorry for his loss. Rest in Peace, Turtle.
