Downtown Dogs

Breaking news!!! Dogs are now (finally) allowed back in downtown Santa Cruz!

For more than thirty years, dogs were banned from downtown, but in July the city council voted 4:2 to lift this ban on Pacific Avenue.  This is just a trial run, but assuming all goes well, this lift would become permanent as of November 30th, 2011.  So, all you dog owners out there, next time you’re heading downtown, bring your pups with you! There are just a few rules all dog owners need to follow:

  1. All dogs must remain on a leash at all times.  This leash must be somewhere between 3 and 5 feet in length, and should be attached to only one dog.

Dudley is ready to hit the town!

  2. No crazy dog packs! Dogs can be in the company of only two other dogs.  Group of four or more dogs are prohibited.
  3. No leaving your dog unattended.  Keep this in mind while shopping – not all stores will be allowing dogs inside, and you cannot leave your dog outside alone or the police can immediately take your dog into custody.  Which leads to rule #4…
  4. No tying your dog to a bench, pole, sign, statue, etc.  The end of your dog’s leash must be in your hand at all times.
  5. No dogs allowed downtown between sunset and sunrise.
  6. Your dog must be visibly displaying current vaccination and license tags.

That’s it! Many merchants downtown are hoping this will encourage more people to shop.  What do you think? Are you more likely to shop in downtown Santa Cruz now that you can bring your dog with you? I know I am!
